Buddypress to slow, and it's not good idea, to create social network.
Why?
because it's based on WP, but what is this WP? -> Blogging.
So, BP, isnt so good idea.

SE, it 100% script to build your own social-network, BUT:
1. it's not free
2. 4 version is quite heavy
3. hard to layout design (maybe for us it's hard)

But i prefer - sE.
